Our Family Recovers (continued)...

by Helga P. Aguayo, June 2008

They saw their father be dragged away to prison, convicted and labeled a felon. And then we had to start over from scratch.

How were we to begin healing?

The saying, "time heals all wounds," comes to mind. And although I can honestly say we are not completely healed. Time has been healing and soothing to us all. I am happy to report we are in a better and happier place. And we are all still working towards a better Aguayo tomorrow. Life hasn't been easy, but everyday gets easier.

I had this fantasy of our lives going back to normal. But our normal was being a military family and that we are no more. Besides how could we go back if we were all, al four of us, forever changed. No, we had to find a new normal. And we are still struggling with that. But we are moving forward. I am happy to report that health-wise I am much better. I am referred to by many as the spotted or cheetah woman. My skin has recovered remarkable and all that is left are spots where psoriasis once invaded. As for mentally and emotionally we are all much better. We are hopeful for tomorrow. We still have the occasional ups and downs with the girls but I think it is normal they just turned 13 (the dreaded teen years - yikes!) I am sure we will continue to recover from the residual effects of military life.

Part of my healing has come from finally sitting down and writing about our experiences. At times it has been painful to recall but fot the most part it has been cathartic. I hope someday to publish our story and maybe help someone else heal through a similliar ordeal.

Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout this process. Your continued support is appreciated!

Sincerely,

Helga
